Slavic Marriage History

The most important function in a Slavic home is the bridal ceremony, which is usually celebrated in flower, summer or fall. It was a time for celebration and happiness, as it marked the beginning of the new living. Warriors married after successful activities, sailors held their ceremonies after a good catch and shepherds tied the knot after the birthing period.

Before the wedding ceremony, the wedding is usually given a rushnyk ( a wreath with a cross). Her parents present her with bread and salt and question for their grace. They also give the couple ektenias ( a ring ) that symbolizes a slavic marriage and a promise of faithfulness and fidelity. The wife wears a mask, which she never takes off, except to go to the restroom. It was considered a bad sign to take off the mask during the meeting, and in old times it was usual to condemn a married who did so.

After the festival the newlyweds walk through the streets of the village, with people throwing seedlings of corn, pastries and currencies for happiness and prosperity. They also quit at regional shrines and give tribute. The wedding ceremony is supervised by a master of ceremonies called a” Tamada”. He is a raucous friend who runs the different contests.

When the wedding leaves her parents ‘ house, she takes with her a shawl that she should stay, not to give away or letting somebody touch. The vicar’s cousins tested the bride by asking her questions and requesting water from her. If they placed funds on a basket, the wedding may grant them waters or answer their queries.
